Q: How did he obtain this art of self defense and for what purpose?

A: In the year 525 A.D. China was split in to many kingdoms. Civilians were disarmed of all weapons. Bandits were soon organized. They were raiding villages, burning the homes, molesting the people and robbing the holy temples of their god. The Canton Warlords failed to protect the people because of the war they were engaged in. The people then turned to Priest Daruma for help. He calmed and told them he would ask God as to how to overcome this crisis. He asked the people that he be left alone so he could pray and meditate to ask the Lord to come to his aid. After many days he appeared before the people and said "the Lord has shown me a vision to overcome the crisis. War and killing is wrong but you will know when to protect yourself against bandits and attackers. We have no weapons. Our fists will become clubs. Our arms will become spears. Our open hands will become swords." He then showed and taught them a new fighting system call, "GO SHIN JUTSU KENPO KARATE," meaning "THE SELF DEFENSE OF HE OPEN HAND." By applying mental concentration and zen sect this became a new way of fighting. From China the art traveled to Okinawa where it was known as "TE" which consists of chops, pokes and rips with the fingers.
